Thomas J. “Tom” Owen (1945–2019) was a Colorado painter and teacher, and a signature member of both the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. For more than fifty years he painted Western landscapes, steam locomotives, fishing boats, rustic architecture and intimate scenes from nature, working mainly in transparent watercolor. The works shown here come from the artist’s family collection.

About the artist

Tom Owen was a Colorado painter and teacher whose career spanned more than fifty years. Raised in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, he discovered watercolor in an evening class while teaching school in Pueblo, Colorado, and soon made painting his life’s work.

He earned signature membership in both the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society, two of the most selective juried societies in American watercolor, and was elected to signature status in ten watercolor societies.
